Jennings, Strouss & Salmon, P.L.C. attorney Otto S. Shill will be speaking on “Palliative Care/End of Life Issues” with Dr. Karen J. Nichols at the American Osteopathic Associations‘ Osteopathic Medical Conference & Exposition (OMED) 2020 on October 18th at 11:30 a.m. Their discussion will be moderated by Dr. Lori Kemper, DO.
Mr. Shill will offer the perspectives of a family caregiver and Dr. Nichols will offer the perspectives of a physician to help the audience:
- Analyze how physicians and family members work together to improve a patient’s end of life experience;
- Better understand the legal and medical ambiguities when considering treatment alternatives for a patient approaching end of life in the context of the patient’s advance directives, Medicare rules and the regulatory environment in which physicians must practice; and
- Consider (i) how treatment options impact a patient’s end of life experience, (ii) the role of physicians in supporting family decision making, (iii) the extent of control a physician should exercise over a patient’s treatment regimen; and (iv) the implication so of all of this on patient / family / physician communications.
