All U.S. employers must complete and retain a Form I-9 for each individual hired for employment in the United States. The Form I-9s are not to be filed with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS); however, employers are required to keep the form and have it readily available for inspection by authorized U.S. Government officials.
Although the current Form I-9 has an expiration date of August 31, 2012, USCIS has announced that the current Form I-9 (revision date 08/07/09) will continue to be valid beyond its planned expiration date.
The USCIS has published drafts of proposed revisions to the Form I-9 and has accepted comments on the proposed changes.
